I have been much influenced by Peter Medawar and Richard Doll in working out my own emotional attitude to the issues that you discuss. Medawar says that the true scientist always praises the work of his predecessors, and points out all the defects of his own. I justify this by analogy with the film world: on a film set, the level of stress is so great that everybody is very friendly to each other, on first name terms, ‘ darling..’, ‘that was wonderful but..’. It’s the only way to survive the stress, to build up everybody’s self-confidence. Research is an equally demoralising occupation, and needs something of the same conventions.
